“Many are called but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14)
Our text elucidates the parable of the wedding feast and the rejection of the man who appeared without a wedding garment (Matt. 22:1-13). The point of the parable is that the gospel invitation is extended to everybody, but only a few, from the divine side, are selected to share the Messianic benefits, and only the same few, from the human side, truly accept the gospel invitation, obey and are truly saved. Thus, there is a clear distinction between the chosen and the called. The chosen are among the called, but not all the called among the chosen. The calling of humans posits the possibility of their salvation, but this possibility becomes actuality only in the few who, in following the call, demonstrate that they have been chosen from all eternity to live with Christ. Says Peter, “Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling an election sure, for if you practice these qualities, you will not fail. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 1:10). And what are these qualities? Says Peter, His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory, and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affections, and brotherly affections with love. For if these qualities are yours and increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so near sighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins [2 Pe. 1:5-9]. In fine, only a few are saved, and they will make their calling and election sure by validating and confirming their election. Let us make our calling an election sure.
